Buccaneers’ Playoff Hopes Hinge on Baker Mayfield’s Shoulder After Injury vs. Rams
Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield injured his shoulder against the Rams. MRI results will determine if he returns next week as Tampa Bay fights for a playoff spot.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are anxiously awaiting MRI results after quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday night’s 34-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The setback forced Mayfield out of the game at halftime and could determine Tampa Bay’s postseason fate.
What Happened to Baker Mayfield?
Mayfield injured his non-throwing shoulder after a first-half hit and aggravated the issue attempting a Hail Mary late in the second quarter. The quarterback was ruled out for the rest of the game and returned to the sideline wearing a sling.
According to early reports from ESPN, the Buccaneers believe Mayfield has a sprained AC joint with no major structural damage, a positive sign that could allow him to return as soon as next week when Tampa Bay hosts the Arizona Cardinals. Monday’s MRI will confirm the severity.
Tampa Bay’s Season on the Line
The Bucs began the season with a 6–2 record and looked like NFC South favorites. But three straight losses have erased their lead, leaving them tied with the Carolina Panthers atop the division at 6–5.
Tampa Bay is chasing a sixth straight NFC South title, but that pursuit depends heavily on Mayfield’s return.
Mayfield’s Season Performance So Far
Before the injury, Mayfield had been one of the league’s most surprising stars, briefly leading MVP conversations earlier in the season. He threw 2,406 passing yards and 18 touchdowns with a 60.8 QBR, the second-highest mark of his career.
However, Sunday’s loss saw him throw a touchdown and two interceptions before departing.
What Happens If Mayfield Can’t Play?
If Mayfield isn’t cleared, veteran Teddy Bridgewater will take over under center. Bridgewater praised Mayfield’s toughness after the game:
“Baker’s a tough guy. He tried to come back out there and tough it out for the guys. That says a lot about him.”
The Buccaneers’ next three opponents:
• Arizona Cardinals
• New Orleans Saints
• Atlanta Falcons
All three matchups carry major playoff implications.
Mayfield’s Injury History
Unfortunately, this is not Mayfield’s first shoulder issue. He played through a torn labrum in 2021 with the Cleveland Browns, battling pain in the same (non-throwing) shoulder.
Despite past setbacks, Mayfield has shown remarkable durability. This is his first missed game since 2022, when an ankle sprain sidelined him while he played for the Panthers. He has started 45 straight games for Tampa Bay.
Could Tampa Bay Survive Without Him?
A shoulder sprain typically requires weeks of rest, but quarterbacks have returned quickly depending on pain tolerance. Still, the Buccaneers’ offense is built around Mayfield’s aggressiveness and leadership, making his availability critical for a playoff push.
If he misses time, Bridgewater must keep the Bucs afloat — a task that grows harder as the division tightens.
