BBL 2025: Seifert Century Powers Renegades Past Heat in High-Scoring Geelong Thriller
Tim Seifert’s blazing century powered Melbourne Renegades to a 14-run win over Brisbane Heat in a high-scoring Big Bash League clash at Geelong.
The Melbourne Renegades made a winning start to their Big Bash League 2025 campaign, defeating the Brisbane Heat by 14 runs in a run-fest at Geelong, powered by a sensational century from Tim Seifert and key all-round contributions from Will Sutherland.
Batting first, the Renegades piled up a commanding 212 for 5, the highest total ever recorded at the venue, before restricting the Heat to 198 for 8 despite late resistance.
Tim Seifert Steals the Show with BBL Century
Tim Seifert produced a masterclass in power hitting, smashing 102 off 56 balls at a strike rate exceeding 180. Mixing innovation with brute force, Seifert repeatedly targeted the short square boundaries, striking six fours and four sixes to register the first century of the BBL 2025 season.
His knock placed him alongside Aaron Finch as only the second Renegades player to score a BBL hundred.
Seifert was well supported by Oliver Peake, the Australia Under-19 captain, who continued his rapid rise with a blistering 57 off 29 balls, as the pair combined for a decisive 121-run partnership.
Tough BBL Debuts for Afridi and Rizwan
While the spotlight was initially on Pakistan stars Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan, the night proved challenging for both.
Afridi endured a nightmare outing, removed from the attack for dangerous bowling after delivering two waist-high full tosses in the 18th over. He finished with damaging figures of 0 for 43 from 2.4 overs, including three no-balls and two wides, forcing Heat captain Nathan McSweeney to complete the over himself.
Rizwan, batting at No. 3 on his BBL debut, struggled to find rhythm and scored just 4 off 10 balls, holing out to left-arm spinner Paddy Dooley.
Heat Chase Falls Short Despite Munro, Peirson Fifties
Chasing a daunting target of 213, Brisbane Heat were never fully in control, even though Colin Munro (55) and Jimmy Peirson (50) posted fighting half-centuries. A late rally with Hugh Weibgen added respectability to the scoreline, but the required rate proved too steep.
Renegades all-rounder Will Sutherland played a crucial role with the ball, claiming 3 for 33, while Jason Behrendorff impressed on debut for his new team with 2 for 34, helping keep Heat at arm’s length throughout the chase.
Statement Win for the Renegades
The victory marks a strong early statement from the Renegades, who capitalised on a depleted Heat bowling attack missing Spencer Johnson, Michael Neser and Matthew Kuhnemann.
On a batting-friendly surface, Melbourne combined power, depth and composure to secure a deserved opening win — and announce themselves as early contenders in BBL 2025.
