Former Manchester United captain and club record goalscorer Wayne Rooney believes the club has taken a crucial step toward rediscovering its historic winning identity following an impressive start under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
United’s recent resurgence includes a dramatic 3–2 victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal, following a morale-boosting Manchester derby win over City, making it two wins from two since Carrick’s appointment on January 13.
The results have lifted United into fourth place in the Premier League table, strengthening their push for Champions League qualification next season — but Rooney insists it’s not just the results that matter.

“The Change Has Been Incredible” – Rooney

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England striker praised the transformation in attitude, structure, and mentality within the club.
“The change in Manchester United over a two-game period is incredible. Michael and his coaches deserve a lot of praise for that,” Rooney said.
He highlighted a renewed togetherness, focus, and belief within the squad, something he felt had been missing previously.
“There’s an attitude and a togetherness in the players now. United went to Arsenal believing they could win. Even when they went a goal down, the reaction was excellent. They deserved the win.”

Carrick’s Impact Goes Beyond the First Team

Rooney also emphasized the importance of structural changes behind the scenes, particularly the reconnection between the first team and the club’s academy system.
“There’s a calmness about the place. All the coaches are present at youth matches — the under-16s, under-18s — just like in the past. That connection with the academy is massive.”
According to Rooney, Carrick and his staff are rebuilding the club culture, not just the matchday tactics.
“These are the things that made Manchester United successful before. In my eyes, they’ve taken a step toward getting the club closer to where it used to be.”

Return to United’s DNA

Rooney, who won five Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes the club is rediscovering its identity.
“You go back to the United DNA — the standards, the culture, the structure. These are things I haven’t seen for a long time. Now I’m starting to see them again.”
He added:
“I knew what Michael could do with this team. I’m really pleased with the start he’s made, especially after the criticism he and his coaches faced.”

A Club Moving in the Right Direction

While a title challenge may be unrealistic this season, the signs of stability, leadership, and identity rebuilding have given fans renewed optimism.
United’s recent performances show:
• Tactical discipline
• Mental resilience
• Squad unity
• Youth-first club culture
• Leadership stability
All hallmarks of the club’s most successful eras.
